appointment at any time within the three years without giving any
further compensation than a passage back to England provided that
the Master's conduct has been satisfactory. If the appointment
is terminated at the end of the three years the Master will be
given a free passage back to England provided that his conduct
has been satisfactory.
If the appointment is continued the Master is placed on the
permanent and pensionable establishment, but the right to a
passage back to England lapses. The three years of probation
count as service for purposes of leave and pension.
When a Master is placed on the permanent establishment he receives
salary at the rate of £460 a year, rising by annual increments of
£20 to £600 a year, and thereafter, subject to an efficiency bar,
at the rate of £625 a year, rising by annual increments of £25
to £800 a year.
There are also several special higher appointments on a scale
of £850 to £1100.
