the Dutch East Indies and the Philippine Islands
are all within reach at a cost which should be
within the officer's means.

It would be extremely difficult for a
married master to live on the salary offered during
the first few years of service in Hong Kong, and it is
considered advisable that
for that reason/officers would be well advised not selec
to marry during their first tour of service unless
possessed of private means.
