Dear Prince Charoon,
I hear that the Siamese Government have recently
arranged for the importation of 1100 chests of Persian opium
into Siam through M. A. Nemazee of Singapore. This Nemazee
is a connection and business associate of the notorious
Nemazee of Hong Kong and was himself concerned in some
illegal drug transactions in Indo-China not very long ago.
We recently heard that the Straits Settlements Government
were also making their contracts for the purchase of
Persian opium through this Nemazee, but the Imperial
Government has now directed that he should be no longer
employed. I thought you would like to know what action
we have taken in the matter, and have no doubt you will
agree that it is very undesirable to employ in this business
any one who is under suspicion of being connected with the
illicit traffic. You may also like to know that our
Consul-General in the Persian Gulf has advised us that there
would be no difficulty in making direct contracts with the
Persian shippers, and if we could give you any help in the
matter, I have no doubt the British Government would be very
glad to do so. Perhaps we might have a talk about this
when we meet in Geneva.
Yours sincerely,
(Sa) MALCOLM DELEVINGNE.
His Highness
Prince Charoon.
