I am directed by Mr. Secretary Amery to
transmit to you, to be laid before the Lords Commissioners
of the Admiralty, the accompanying copy of telegraphic
correspondence with the Governor of the Straits
E do 27 Jan Settlements regarding the effect which the recent events
in China have produced on the community in Malaya.
2. Mr. Amery would be very glad if it were found
possible to give effect to the Governor's suggestion
that a warship should bedetached to Singapore for the
purpose of exercising a restraining influence. If
effect were given to the suggestion which was made some
weeks ago that the whole or a part of the Battalion of
British Infantry which is stationed at Singapore should
be moved to Hong Kong it would be imperative in Mr.Amery's
opinion to send a cruiser to Singapore, but he assume s
