I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt
of your Confidential (2) despatch of the 30th December,
1926, enclosing a draft statement prepared by the
Attorney-General in answer to certain enquiries made by
the French Consul at Hong Kong concerning the legal
status of British subjects of Chinese race. I have to
express my regret at the delay in answering your despatch which has arisen from the necessity of consulting other
departments of His Majesty's Government in the matter.
2. I am now in a position to approve the draft
reply contained in your despatch, subject to the following amendments:-
(1) Paragraph 2. Omit last sentence, i.e., the words from English Law" to "Colonial subjects".
(2) The reference to "British Nationality and Status of Aliens Acts 1914 to 1918" should read "The British
Nationality and Status of Aliens Act 1914 to 1922".
(3) Paragraph 5. The sentence "What is popularly
known as Imperial naturalisation can be obtained from the Secretary of State through the Governor" etc., should be altered to read "That is popularly known as Imperial naturalisation can be obtained from the Governor, subject to the approval of the Secretary of State" etc.
