Dear Porvate

Dear Private Secretary,

FOREIGN OFFICE, S.W.1.

17th September, 1927.

With reference to Mr. Ormsby Gore's letter of

the 14th September, I am afraid we have not kept the

Colonial Office posted quite up to date with the Boxer

Indemnity correspondence. The more recent telegrams

(enclosed herein) were not sent over to the Colonial

Office at the time, though this omission has now been

See 25 rectified. Mr. Ormsby Gore would have seen Peking

telegram No. 511 and our telegram to Peking No. 1280

in distribution, but he would not have seen our telegram

to Peking No. 537. If he had ne would have been reassured

that for the present, at any rate, all action regarding the

indemnity is suspended, and no steps are being taken towards

the formation of the Provisional Committee. I also enclose

a copy of the latest memorandum on the subject issued to the

British members of the Advisory Committee here, which makes

the present position perfectly clear. Lampson's telegram

of the 2nd of June was sent (on 7th June) to Mr. Amery, but

not to the Colonial Office. A copy is enclosed.

A. Bevir Esqre.,

Yours very truly

MzMonald

Private Secretary.
