Many thanks for your letter of the 14th of September
about the formation of a Provisional Committee in China
in connection with the control of the Boxer Indemnity Funds.
I am glad to be able to reassure you that for the
present nothing is being done with regard to the constitu-
tion of this Committee either here or in China. The whole
question is being left in suspense until later in the autumn
when a further meeting of the Boxer Indemnity Committee will
be held to re-examine the position in the light of recent
events.
Briefly what has happened since your letter of the 26th
of July to me is as follows:-
On the 5th of August O'Malley telegraphed that he had
completed the Chinese membership of the Provisional Committee
and was sending out formal invitations to the Chinese nom-
inees. He put forward certain names for the British
membership and asked us to issue invitations to those among
