I recovered from Mr. Holmes, Sir A.

Chamberlain's letter of the 26th May and the Minutes

attached.

It will no longer be necessary to write

to Sir C. Clementi as proposed since the information

which we wished to obtain from him is now given in

No. 14.

In this despatch while still pressing

strongly that the whole of the sun for which he

originally asked, £1,404,000, should be made over to

asks the Hong Kong University, he states that if such a

contribution be regarded as impossible the University

should at least be given 2230,000 for the establishment

and endowment of a Chinese School. This figure is

nuch in accordance with that contemplated by Sir G.

Minute

Grindle's of the 1st of June. We have heard nothing

from the Foreign Office since Sir A. Chamberlain': S

letter of the 26th May and do not know what reply

Sir M. Lampson returned to the suggestions in the

Foreign Office telegram of the 23rd May. Perhaps in

the circumstances the Secretary of State may wish to

send a copy of this new despatch to Sir A. Chamberlain

in continuation of his personal correspondence and ask
