My telegram of 2nd March Trade situation Shipping
position appears to be improving slowly notwithstanding difficulties at Yangtse Ports. Emigrant traffic is
especially brisk British vessels getting full share even fram
Usualyearly agreements between British Shipping Companies and Chinese shippers at Tientsin have also been
signed. On the other hand Chinese merchants at Saigon
are endeavouring to boycott British ships out of rice trade.
Local sugar refineries Taikoo have closed down and Jardine Matheson and Company expect to close owing to diminished demand due to disturbances impoverishing consuming districts of China but Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank have been able to declare total dividend of £8 and
Hong Kong Electric tramways report a highly successful
year. A fair amount of business has been done in piece goods for the autumn delivery.
Tension between communist and moderates appears to have become general throughout nationalist areas merchant
versus employé dispute in Canton is still unsettled labour
extremists have gone with, the third International
delegation to Hankow
