t troops, while other leaders are Lin Sam To, Lai Chun Ying and $ 見過

La Kin To, all former officers under Chan Kwing ling. These

troops bid fair to earn the same reputation for extortion as

their predecessors. They have already compelled the merchants

of Ping Shan and Lung Kwong to pay between them a sum of

$1,000, and, at Sha U Chung and Tip Fuk, have revived the old head tax of 40 cents on all passengers leaving these places by the Taipo Ferry Launch.

The political situation is somewhat obscure, but,

nominally at least, these troops are subordinate to Canton

as their leader, Lo Kwan, was only recently placed by the

Canton Authorities in charge of the Ping Shan District.
