also all be eliminated from China. Should we fail to

eliminate the Communists and in consequence to accomplish

our revolution, Soviet Russia will gain the reins of Govern-

ment of China. In that event the members of our Kuomintang in Wuhan, who have sold our Party to the disgrace of our

Country, will have to be blamed, and not the Communists.

Comrade Wong Ching Wai, during his recent visit to

Shanghai, had a long conversation with me. Finally he

advised me saying, "Kai Shek, should you be defeated in the

event of a war between the South East Government and Wuhan,

our Kuomintang would be wiped out of existence, and the

Communist Party would be exalted. If you turn out victor-

ious and overcome Wuhan, our Kuomintang will revert to the

condition it was in in the 13th year of the Republic (1924).

When neither the troops nor the members of the Right will co-operate with you, your activity in the Party will be brought to an end." His suggestion means that I should

give up my position, put aside all my charges, leave my

troops to my subordinates and let him be responsible for

them. However nothing would affect my own position, even

should the Communists in Juhan get the upper hand, for I

can still look to a later opportunity for my activity, and

when I succeed in overcoming Wuhan, I shall be at liberty

to remain or to retire. Therefore I answered him frankly

"Such a question cannot affect the present situation. What

we have at present is a question of the existence of our

Kuomintang. As long as our Kuomintang exists, I will assum

all responsibility, and will never craftily attempt to

shun it or to take the easiest course. I will play the

part of an honourable man.

Now we must part with the Communists irrespective
