similar communiqué. If the communique were satisfactory, His Excellency undertook that lir. Hu's call should be
returned by Mr. Hallifax by a call on General Li Chai-sum
next week.
His Excellency made it clear that, in order to establish
friendly relations, there must be some outward and visible
sign on the part of Canton that its Government desired friendly relations to be re-established and stated that the
best evidence of this would be for General Li Chai-sum to
pay a formal call in Hong Kong on the Governor, which the Governor would be prepared thereafter to return in Canton.
The conversations were entirely friendly throughout.
