No. 190.
Sir,
ENCLOSURE NO. 2.
120
Government House,
Hong Kong. 17th May, 1927.
I have the honour to acknowledge receipt of your telegram of yesterday's date regarding the firing of the "Lungshan" yesterday morning in the
neighbourhood of Whampoa.
I have received with astonishment the news
of this outrage on a British ship so well known as the "Lunoshan" while engaged on her usual peaceful voyage laden with Chinese passengers between Hong Kong and
Canton.
I desire to support to the utmost your prompt demand for an apology, for the punishment of the offenders and for the immediate cessation of such
lawless and hostile actions, and I enclose for your information a copy of a letter of to-day's date from the Secretary of the Hong Kong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company, Limited.
I would add that enquiries made locally
have contradicted the rumour that the s.s. "Kwang Tung"
was also fired on yesterday.
I have the honour to be,
His Britannic Majesty's Consul General,
CANTON.
Sir,
Your most obedient servant,
(Sd) C. CLEMENTI.
Governor, &c.
