FRONTIER INCIDENTS

During the past week the following more or less

minor incidents occurred on the frontier :-

1. SHAL CHUN

(1)

|

In my report of the 24th April, 1927, I stated there had been dissension in the garrison at Sham Chun, and that the

3 起

Commandant, Tang Chi Chiu, was then virtually a prisoner.

Early in the past week I learned that Tang had been summoned

# 4 A to Canton and that his chief subordinate, 10 YING TSUN, had

assumed command. I have heard since that those of the

garrison with "Red" sympathies have all deserted.

(2) Yesterday, the 7th inst., there was a demonstration

and procession at Sham Chun, staged by the local garrison. The proceedings started with the ceremony of bowing to the

34 picture of the late President Sun, followed by the usual speeches. These latter consisted of diatribes against

Communism

Communism and the Communist leaders, and others extolling

117

Chiang Kai Shek and the Nationalist aims in general.

Bannerets and posters with the new slogans were freely displayed. One of these read "Down with Japanese Imper- ialism; the Japanese are the chief pirates of the world". There were no anti-British slogans.

(3) The railway "slow through" service was resumed on Tuesday the 3rd inst., but the "express through" service will not be possible until the engines recently wrecked

have been repaired.
