Report of a Meeting held at the Governor's Yamen,

In calling together representatives of the foreign
press, Mr. Lien Lai, Acting Director of the Political Department of the Chinese Nationalist Revolutionary Armies,
said that his object was to explain the Party "purging" movement which is now taking place in South China, and to bring about a better understanding between the Kuomintang
Government and the foreigners in China. He thought it must appear very strange to the foreign nations why the Chinese in Canton ever took the Communists into their Government,
and why they are now getting rid of them. The National ist
Government, he said, was three years ago, in a very
difficult position, and in order to centralise the revolutionary forces in South China not only did they admit Communists into their ranks, but drew support from even
anarchists and others who would give up their principles and adopt those of Dr. Sun. In other words, those Communists who joined the Kuomintang Government were obliged to withdraw from all their former party affiliations, and submit in entirety to the principles of the Kuomintang.
In taking up the standard of Nationalism the Communists admitted the falsehood of their own ideas, but unfortunately did not remain loyal to the Kuomintang. They used the good name of the Kuomintang Government to
bring
