and shot. In Shanghai British marines have landed and taken
up defensive posts throughout the Concession as if they were facing a powerful enemy, and causing a state of great panic.
Yesterday further terrible news was received.
The tramway
workmen in Shanghai, after the settlement of their strike by
agreement with the Tramway Co. held a peaceful procession in
20 cars so as to show their willingness to resume work.
When they reached Nanking Road, the British Municipal Police
suddenly cut the electric wire and thus stopped the cars. At
the same time a large detachment of armed police were sent
out in several motor-cars equipped with iron shields and machine-guns to attack our unarmed workmen, stab them recklessly and make wholesale arrests. Many of our workmen members were wounded, killed and arrested. Taking into consideration all that has happened in the past and recently
it would seem to us that the British Imperialists have
indeed ordered a general attack on us. Unless we choose to
fold our arms and wait for death, we have only one other resource, that is to fight desperately to save our lives. All officers and men of this Army have already given up
their persons to the service of the people, and we now
declare that we will lead the van in our desperate fight
against the British Imperialists. We hope that all our fellow-countrymen will be unanimous in propaganda work, will awake and rise in a body to fight directly with the British Imperialists. All our officers and units of this Army are ready to take orders and lead the van to fight for our very
existence, and get rid of our great enemy.
All officers and units of the 4th Army of the
Nationalist Revolutionary Army.
