puppets of Yuan Shi Kai adopted against our late Preident and spread libels against me. There is an ancient saying,
that "A thousand lies cannot hide a single truth". These
libels can do me no real injury. But even the mother of
Tsang Sham was induced by rumours to believe that her son
had committed murder, and this shows that the idle gossip
of the multitude is powerful enough even to melt down
gold. Therefore though I can leave outsiders unanswered,
yet I must explain to my own colleagues and disciples how difficult is my present position and how a few
malicious rascals are intriguing against me.
I have no need to answer the question whether
you believe the libel that I have abandoned the pro-
Russia policy and allied my self with Imperialistic Japan, as of course you do not believe it. Why did our late
President ally himself with Soviet Russia? It was
because he wanted to secure freedom and equality for
China. Why had he to ally himself with Soviet Russia
in order to secure freedom and equality for China?
Because Soviet Russia has treated China on equal terms.
Since Soviet Russia has not abandoned her attitude of
equality towards us, on what grounds should we abandon our policy of alliance with her? Japan is an Imperial country. We can never come to terms with her as long as she still clings to her Imperialist policy in dealing with us Chinese. And this does not apply to Japan only. We can ally ourselves with any country and treat it in the same way as we have treated Russia if it can abandon Imperialism and treat us with equality. Our whole diplomatic policy is founded on the basis that freedom and equality should be secured for China. We must appose
