visional Committee for the temporary control of the British

Concussion at Hankow, should be organized, and 5 members

were appointed.

On the 5th. the Committee took over the

control of the British Concession.

was still retained in the British Police Headquarters to

take charge of all matters concerning the soldiers and

police sent to maintain order in the British Concussion;

the Public Puce pure...u, the 2 Special Districts and the

Model District had euch sunt 20 constables to be on duty

at the various posts in turn. Instructions were also given

to the Public Zo CU Sureau to send 40 men of the Po Un Tui

(Peace Maintenance Corps), the Generul Labour Association

to send 300 pickets and the City Garrison the 29th. Detach-

ment to patrol the different districts. Now order has been

restored in the British Concession, and the 300 pickets wer

all withdrawn on the 7th. But the British residents were

still suspicious and afraid to return to their ordinary

peaceful occup.tions. Eugene Chen (ERR) the Folign

Minister, called on the British Consul-General at 6 p.m. ΟΥ

the 6th., and astured him that the activity of the Chinese

proletariat was only directed against the brutality of the

British marines for their butchery of the populace and that

they felt no hostility against the British residents, and

therefore there was no need for these to be alarmed. Truc

the General Labour Union had thre..tened a general strikc

against the British, out their activities were dependent on

curt in definite rusolutions which they had adopted and no

strike would be enforced without good reason. The adminis...

tration of the British Concession had been taken over by

the National Government. As for no otiations regarding the

recent tragic events the Government took its stand upon

the demands put forward by the populace.
