representatives of the China Navigation Company, and

Hong Kong, Canton and Macao Steamboat Company, res- pectively, and they declined to take any action which could in their opinion only result in their vessels

being again forced off the run.

5. Mr. Wu stated that he had "authority from

the Seamen's Union" to transfer Captain Jenkins from

the "Sai On" to a boat on the Hong Kong-Macao run. He

was, however, informed that if Captain Jenkins was to be removed from the "Sai On" it was the opinion of this

Government that he should be paid off and adequately compensated and not expected to take over another boat

by leave of the Union.

6. Captain Jenkins has reported that he has finally been granted wages for life (he is 70) at the rate of

$505 per

month. He will nominally hold a "Shore Super- intendent's" billet, but will be at liberty to leave the

Colony as he may desire.

7. It is reported that action by the Union against certain other British officers is shortly to be expected and I shall be glad to have your views on the situation

thus created.
