(1) To continue their traditional policy of iron and blood
in the hope that the Chinese revolution may be
suppressed.
(2) To suppress the development of the Chinese
revolutionary influence.
(3) To welcome the assistance of Chang Tso-lin, the new
tool for helping their invasion of China, in order that they may maintain their special privileges in China. Let us give you the history of the British Imperialists in their invasion of China, so as to
prove what policy she followed during the year past.
Cruel actions of British Imperialists in China.
Opium War. The opium war in 1840 was the first invasion made by Imperialists on China, and in that the British led the van. This war was the consequence of the steps taken by China to prevent smuggling of poisonous opium into her to do harm to the Chinese. But the British imported it forcibly under the protection of gun-boats, and this led to war, which resulted in the defeat of China. And therefore unequal treaties were made at Nanking. The important conditions in
them are as follows:-
(1) The whole island of Hong Kong was ceded to England,
and thus China lost her key position of the South. (2) An indemnity of $23,000,000 was paid to England, and
thus China was reduced to bankruptcy.
(3) Canton, Foo-chow, Amoy, Ningpo and Shanghai were
opened as commercial ports, and these are the places where foreigners first acquired their concessions. (4) Foreigners received the right of extra-territoriality thus depriving Chine of her entire sovereignty.
(5) The Customs Tariff was fixed, thus taking the life
of economic China.
