Sir,
I have the honour to inform you that the will
of the late Sir Paul Chater, Kt., C.M.G., unofficial member
of the Executive Council of Hong Kong, declared that, upon
his widow dying or ceasing to reside at "Marble Hall", his
residence in Conduit Road on the island of Hong Kong, he devised and bequeathed "Marble Hall" with its furniture, fixtures and household effects to the Government of Hong Kong absolutely. I attach copies of clause 22 of Sir Paul's will and of clause 4 of the first codicil to the will, which
govern this matter.
2.
Lady Chater left Hong Kong for the United
States of America in June last with the intention of
returning again to Hong Kong towards the end of this year and then inhabiting "Marble Hall" for a short time, after which she proposed to leave this Colony for good. She is
now, I believe, in Paris. She does not, I understand,
intend to make "Marble Hall" her home, and this house will,
therefore, soon become the absolute property of the
Hong Kong Government.
3.
"Marble Hall" is a very fine residence, built
by Sir Paul Chater for his own occupation. It is beautifully
situated

LIEUTENANT COLONEL L. C.M.S. AMERY, M.P.,
