Enclosure 1.
Hon. Colonial Secretary,
I cannot get hold of Wong Kan. He had a small office in China Building for a short time; this is now closed. His private house at Wanchai was visited, he was absent, but it appeared that his business was that of a dealer in picture postcards. Enquiries go to show that after a voyage or two to Amoy, the s.a. "Prominant" was rechartered to someone in Macau for a voyage to Bushire and back. Then the Hongkong agents heard about it they sent a European to Macau to enquire, and the Harbour Master there assured him that the voyɛge was for legitimate purposes. Wong Kan is however apprehensive as he has got Messrs. Johnson, Stokes and Master to write to me asking whey I had had his house searched. He has a brother Wong Kong. I have been unable to discover what the two really do here. Wong Kan I believe left the Colony as soon as enquiries
were made.
