come off at Shanghai, the idea of booking to Kobe may have been part of the arrangement, when the ordinary examination of baggage was made the trunks being marked "Kobe" would not be brought forward for examination, but just before the ship left when there were only a few Customs watchers on board, who possibly could be bribed to keep out of the way,

the trunks would be put over the side, Tanaka making up his mind apparently at the last moment to leave the ship at Shanghai, the place from which

as a matter of fact, he started.
