Section 284 of the Merchant Shipping Aot, 1894.
A copy of a memorandum relating to the survey of motor vessels is enclosed herewith for the
guidance of the Hong Kong Surveyors.

SURVEIS OF MOTOR-VESSELS (WITH HEAVY OIL ENGINES)
FOR REDERAL OF PASSENGER CERTIFICATES.
The procedure of the Surveyors of the Board of Trade in
carrying out surveys for the renewal of the Passenger Certificates
of Diesel engined motor vessels is, subject to modification in
particular cases, somewhat as follows:-
(1) Inspection of cylinders with covers removed.
(a) Examination of fuel, air and exhaust valves including
seats and springs.
(b) Examination of covers for cracks, scale in cooling
water spaces, &0.
(c) Examination and gauging of bore of liners for wear.
(d) Examination of pistons.
Whether a piston should be removed for further in- spection may be conditional upon the running as
shown from examination of the liner.
(2) Inspection of safety devices, i.e. relief valves on air systems, non-return valves in air and fuel lines, flame retarders in air lines &c.
(3) Inspection of water cooling arrangements which in some
cases, especially to the pistona, are liable to derange-
ment.
(4) Inspection of running machinery.

(a) Inspection of shafting, rods, can shafts, &c. in
accordance with usual procedure for steam engines.
(b) Inspection of journals. Cape should be lifted and
a pecial attention should be given to the examination of the wearing surfaces of those bearinge oiled by forced lubrication and notes should be taken of exceptional wear.
(o) Inspection of the forced lubricating system and
the atate of the oil sump. The conditions should be such that a sufficient supply of clean, cool oil can be supplied to the bearings. There should be apare lubricating and cooling pumps, and the pressure gauge, strainers and coolers should be in good condition.
(5) Inspection of Compressors.
(a) cylindere.
(b) Coolera.
(u) Safety devices.
(0) Pipes &c. to be cleaned of dirt and oil.
(6) Inspection of blast air, and starting air containers.
