improbable. As for our apprehension that Indians in the Far East may have been contaminated, the remark made by the Colonial Secretary of Hong Kong when I explained the purpose of my visit 'I think you've come on a wild-goose chase'
Indeed, if I aptly sums up local opinion on the subject. ignore for the present the strike-supporting Indian clique in Canton City, to which I will refer in more detail below,
I have so far come across nothing which indicates that Indians in South China or Malaya have been undesirably affected by Russian Propaganda.
2. I will first endeavour to summarise as briefly as I can the events which have led up to the present boycott and
Dr. Sun to analyse the situation as it now presents itself. Yat Sen, the republican leader and the founder of the Kuo Min Tang or 'People's Party', was much attracted by the Communist ideal and openly encouraged Russian penetration in
Chi na.
His object was to unify China and to introduce under the auspices of the Kuo Min Tang a republican form of government which should be Socialist in character. Reports received from Canton in 1924 indicated that he was obtaining much material assistance, including arms and munitions of war, from the Russians, whose services had also been utilised for the purpose of training the cadets of the Whampoa military academy. At the time of his death early in 1925 the province of Kwangtung was overrun by Yunnanese mercenaries who had originally been called in by Dr. Sun to assist in the pacification of the province. That general Cheung Kai Shek was able to inflict a crushing defeat on the Yurnanese in the spring of 1925 was largely due to the military efficiency of the Whampoa cadeta trained by the Russians. (I might here note in parenthesis that an offer was once made to the British Consul-General at Canton to provide a Canadian staff of instructors for the Whampoa
academy
