IMPORTANT.

Before leaving Hankow tonight I received "Times", "Daily Mail" and Reuters correspondents,

I had proposed to read to them following statement which I had shown in advance to Chen and to which he took no exception.

"A number of meetings have taken place during the past week between Mr. Lampson and Mr. Chen in in- which the aims of the Nationalist Government, cluding important question of alteration of treaties, have come up for informal and frank discussion.

The conversations were of a preliminary and informatory character. Time is now required to take stock of the position. Mr. Lampeon is accordingly proceeding to Peking and it is intended that conver- sations, which are to be regarded as being merely adjourned for the time being, shall be resumed at an early date."

A quarter of an hour before correspondents were due, Chen burst in upon me, coming straight from meeting of political council, and earnestly begged me to make no statement at all beyond emphasizing cordiality of our meetings and fact that the
