With reference to your communication of the

2nd September, 1924 (39809/24) and previous correspondence

respecting the remuneration of the Chief Justice of

Hongkong for acting as Appeal Judge at Shanghai on

occasions when it is necessary to form a full court, I

am directed by Secretary Sir Austen Chamberlain to state,

for the information of Mr. Secretary amery, that the

Comptroller and Auditor General has given instructions,

which have been confirmed by the Lords Commissioners of

His Majesty's Treasury, that the whole of the annual

contribution of ten thousand dollars made by the

Government of Hongkong towards the maintenance of the

Registry of Companies at Shanghai shall be brought to

accout by this department. It will be remembered that

under the present arrangement only seven thousand dollars

of this eum is actually paid over to His Majesty's

Consul General at Shanghai, the balance being paid to

the Chief Justice at Hongkong in respect of his services

as Appeal Judge. Mr. Amery will also recollect that

this arrangement was made in order to meet the conditions imposed by Sir H. Gollan's predecessor and that it was

to be reconsidered on the occurrence of a vacancy in the

Chief Justice's post at Shanghai.
