With reference to my letter of May 31st
addressed to the Commissioner for Foreign Affairs at Canton, I regret to have to inform you of the receipt of a telegram from Nanning stating that Mr. Philips,
the representative of the . Asiatic Petroleum Company Limited who was captured by pirates near T'ai Pling Fu,
has been killed,
I reported the sad occurence to His Majesty's
Legation in Peking and have now received instructions
from His Majesty's Minister to inform you that he
reserves the right to claim a substantial indemnity
in due course for the murder of this British subject,
