With reference to my despatch No. 95 of the 4th
February relative to the deportation of the Bell family
from Pakhol, I have the honour to transmit to you herewith
copies of five despatahes 1o8. 3, 5, 6, 8 and 10, which
have been received from His Majesty's Consal at Kiungobow,
and which give a good description of the dangers and
difficulties of the situation with which Mr. R.S. ¿ratt
has had to deal both during and after the occupation of
that port and the surrounding districts of Hainan Island
by the "Red" Cantonese forces.
2. On receipt of Mr. Pratt's despatoh Ho. 6 I
telegraphed to the Commander-in-Chief through Him
Excellency the Governor of Hongkong stating that in view
of possibly serious developments at Kiungohow I hoped that
he would be able in co-operation with Bir Cecil Clementi
to arrange for assistance to the British communities at
Pakhol and Hoihow in regard to the provisioning and to the
maintenance of communications with Hongkong on the lines
suggested in His Majesty's Consul's above mentioned
despatch.
3. I was, however, not unduly apprehensive of any
possible developments in the situation at Kiungohow in
