These dimensions have been found convenient for general

cargo work.

With wider quay spaces, and godowns set

back on each floor, cranes of very long radius are

needed, with consequent higher capital cost and slower

rate of working. With a 40 ft. quay space, projecting

balconies on the 1st floor level are a useful feature,

in order to protect the ground floor doorways from

driving rain; and a set back of the godown face on the

1st floor is then not necessary.

11.

With regard to size of Godowns, the ideal in

cargo-working is that each ship which arrives to

discharge should have a clear area of one complete

transit shed or godown ground floor for the cargo landed,

and that this cargo should be all taken delivery of,

or removed to storage godowns, before another ship comes

alongside that, berth.

Excess of floor area over the space thus

required is wasted; or there will be a tendency to bring

a second ship alongside before the cargo from the first

has been completely removed a practice to be avoided

if possible. Excessive width causes also unnecessary

cost of handling cargo.

-

The suggested godown area of 400 x 130,

say 50,000 sq.ft., provides ample accommodation on

the ground floor for 5,000 measurement tone of cargo,

which is more than double the present normal require-

ments for ships from Europe, taking into account the

proportion which goes to open-air storage. Vessels

from the Pacific at present discharge a considerable

part of their cargo flour particularly direct into

lightere (thus saving half the landing charges), and
