most of Kiang-si province, which he has placed in charge of General Lo llống-t'eng ($††). Marshal Tu F'ei-fu is endeavouring to rally his forces in Honan province with a view to advancing southward upon Hankov. One of his generals T'in Wai-k'an (117) is said to have reached Kwong-shui(K), and another of his generals Tun Kwok-chons (1) is said to have occupied Lo-Sheng- kwan (X A ). General Yong Sham ( 4 ), of Jan- hsien notoriety, is reported to be co-operating with Karshal Yu and was on the 25th October advancing eastwarda upon Sin-t'o-chan (Al†) and San-t'ai (†4 14 ).
As regards the disposition of the southerners it is stated that General Cheung Kai-shek is at San-yu (A)) and
that Feneral T'ong Shang-chi is protecting Hankow. Near the Fukien frontier General Chong gai (5) is holding
the town of Chong-chau (against the southern attack under General Ho Ying-yam (k) and there has been fighting at Siu-k'ai (h), while the tupan of Fukien province General Chau Yam-yan (A) is reported himself to be at Weng-on (✯✯ ), not far from the point where the boundaries of Fukien, Kuang-tung and
Kiang-si meet.

On the whole things do not seem to have gone well with the southerners of late and the approach of winter on the Yangtze, to which the Cantonese are not acclimatized, will tell against their troops. It looks
as if at the moment both sides had fought to a standstill: but, should General T'org Shang-chi desert the southerners, as it is suggested in the attached memorandum he is likely to do, the position of General Cheung Kai-shek, assuming him still to be alive, would become very precarious.
