RIGHT HONOURABLE
In continuation of my secret despatch of
the 30th September, on the subject of the civil war in South China, I have the honour to enclose translations, taken from the Taun Wan Yat Po of the 29th September, (a) of a letter written by General Cheung Kai-shek on the 26th to Mr. Chúí Wai-sang (†), president of the Che-kiang Public Association, and (b) of a letter dated the 17th September written by Harshal Chang Tso- lin to Marshal Sun Ch'uan-fang.
2.
The position of the present. Canton Government in Kuang-tung itself appears to grow increasingly precarious. I enclose a cutting from today's issue of the South China Morning Post which states that, according to a reliable report received from Canton yesterday, Wai-chow on the East River has
been captured by the forces of General Ch'an Kireng-
meng, which are advancing towards Shek-lung on the
Kowloon-Canton railway, and further that Shok-ki, a township of the Hengahan district, just north of Macao, has been captured by a band of 3,000 bandits under Ngai Pong pleng. If these reports are true, hostile troops are operating in districts not far to the east and to
the South of Canton city.
