regulations, Mr. Brenan and I think that British steamers in the Chinese coastwise trade should 510
resume their sailings via Hongkong to Canton. This view is also held by Colonel Haydey-Bell, the Commissioner
of Chinese Haritime Customs at Canton. Accordingly
Mr. Brenan and I have today conferred with Mr. D. G. M. Bernard, the head of Messrs. Jardine, Matheson & Company, and Mr. C. C. Knight, the head of Kessrs. Butterfield & Swire, with a view to arranging that steamers of these two firms should again visit Canton.
r. Bernard and Mr. Knight have also been in consultation with Rear-Admiral Stirling on the subject. There are difficulties in the way of obtaining cargo to and from Canton, owing to the extreme timidity of Chinese merchants, and there may also be difficulty in the discharge and loading of cargo at Canton. But the
two British river-steamers now carry numerous passengers and obtain a fair amount of cargo between Hongkong and Canton; and, when the strike pickets have been driven off the Canton waterways, it is to be hoped that conditions will further improve. Anyway we are agreed that the experiment is worth making, and I expect that it will soon be made.
