At this stage of the proceedings, the advice of Messrs. Coode, liatthews, Fitzmaurice and Wilson, Consulting Engineers on the improvement of the harbour, was obtained with reference to the proposed scheme of development at North Point. Their report was forwarded on the 7th October
1922.
Referring to this report (para.16), it would appea that whilst they are not in favour of the development of the
site for deep water berths, they consider such a scheme is practicable.
Their objections to the scheme being:-
(a). Para. (8). From a financial point of view, such
work might interfere with the carrying out of the Hung Hom
Bay Scheme,
(b). Para. (5). It being an extension of an existing
promontory, they anticipate that the accentuation of tidal currents caused thereby would hamper shipping at the propos-
ad new quays.
(c). Paras. (6 & 17). Wave-action caused by a strong
N.E. wind particularly during the passage of a typhoon,
would be deflected so as to prejudice the usefulness of wharfage to be constructed at Hung Hom Bay, and in the case of a vertical quay wall being constructed, the face of such a wall would increase sea disturbance in its vicinity.
Objection (a) appears to be due to a misunderstan- ding, as the work undertaken in connection with the construction of quayage at North Point is to be carried out by private enterprise. Furthermore, the two schemes are designed to serve different ends. The Hung Hom Bay Schene to provide facilities for the loading and discharge of vessels from Europe and America The North Point Scheme to make provision for coaster steamers and for lighters which
