towards Sham Chun. As we neared the military headquarters we were halted by a soldier who enquired our business. This was explained to him and we then proceeded direct to the Kun Yam Temple, the headquarters of the Strike Pickets. Awaiting us, outside the temple door, were two officers of sorts and a large number of strike pickets. We were received in anything but a friendly spirit. Every- one seemed to be shouting at us, some in Chinese and others in broken English, but it eventually became clear that before we could be admitted we must hold up our hands and submit to being searched. Mr. Wood asked me what I thought of the demand and I said: "Nothing doing, it is sheer insult", Mr. Wood then expostulated with the officers, who finally agreed to admit us without search, but that I must first hand over my revolver. This I refused to do as I considered it derogatory to my dignity as a police officer to hand over any of my equipment to such an undisciplined rabble, so the others were admitted leaving me outside. I was at once surrounded by soldiers and pickets and was agreeably surprised at the friendliness of the former in direct contrast to the pickets
who upbraided the soldiers for taking to me, calling me a "fan kwai
lo", a "luk yi kwai".
After a rather long interval Mr. Wood came and informed me
that the strike leaders had agreed to release the crew, also to hand
over the arms for which they required a receipt. Mr. Wood showed me a draft of the receipt he proposed to give, asking and receiving my approval as to its context. A little later Mr. Wood again canc to secure my approval to a slight amendment in the wording of the receipt. Followed another interval and then a Chinese officer came and invited me inside. As I was following the officer the pickets at the door shouted: "Wai" and pointed to my revolver, but I took no notice and proceeded inside. There I was asked to add my signature to the receipt, which I did. I also learned that it would take some little time to collect all the arme, as some were
