unable to deliver the Hon. Capt. Supt. of Police' communication as none of the Strike Pickets would accept.it. This rather complicated matters, as it left Sham Chun authorities in ignorance of our intentions. However, while the Surrey's were taking up their position, I suggested to Mr.A.E. Food that we try ourselves and get in touch with the pickets, so we crossed the bridge and interrogated a solitary armed picket on duty near the Gustom Office. This man was rather sour in his manner, but told us that his No.1 would shortly arrive to meet us. Accordingly, we waited there, and presently a rummer in picket uniform arrived saying that the No.1 had gone to
Canton, but that his deputy would be along to meet us at about 13.30
hours. We continued waiting until 14.00 hours and then a second
runner came and asked for the letter which the pickets had previous-
ly refused to accept. I turned and called to S.I. Hoare to bring
me the letter, but before he came up the runner turned, and, without
a word of explanation, made off towards Sham Chun.
During the time we had been waiting I had questioned several
