FRONTIER INCIENTS.
Grounding of No. 10 Police Motor Boat in C.T. Capture of the Motor Boat Crew by Strike Pickets and thier subsequent release.
At 10.00 hours the 20.7.25, No. 10 Police Motor Boat, in charge of L.S. A122 Hughes, left Lok Ma Chan and proceeded on patrol duty up the sham Chun Hiver, beyond Lown. The river, owing to the recent heavy rains, was somewhat swollen, and, on the re- turn journey, at a point a short distance below Man Kam To Ferry where the river takes a sharp bend, the motor boat got out of the main channel and grounded in Chinese territory. This happened at about 13.00 hours.
The crew made endeavour to get the boat clear, but were unsuccessful in their afforts. While the crew were thus engaged a strong force of strike pickets and soldiers arrived and called upon L.3.Hughes and the cres to surrender. L.S.Hughes refused to do so whereupon the pickets and/or soldiers comenced firing at the motor boat, the bullets fortunately going overhead. L.S.Hughes did not reply to the fire for the following reasons, nis supply of ammunition was limited, his rear was cut off by a flooded river and his front blocked by an armed force in overwhelming numbers. Being unwilling to surrender, however, he and his men took refuge
in the water up to their necks, in which position they remained until after 18.00 hours, then, finding his position one of increas- ing danger, L.S. Hughes decided to surrender. he and his men were
at once disarmed, placed under arrest and taken to sham thun, where
they were detained until 17.00 hours next day when they were re-
leased in circumstances detailed elsewhere in this report.
That anything untoward had happened to the motor boat
vaa first made known to me at about 22.00 hours,20,7,25, when
