I have communicated further with the Consul-
General, Canton, by despatch and have requested him to make a serious protest against the action of the strike pickets in illegally seizing and detaining British subjects and property.

The successful and speedy rescue of our men and of the motor boat is mainly due to the courage, tact and resourcefulness of Mr. A. E. Wood, who is at present Director of Education, but whom I specially sent out to Sham Chun as being the best man for this difficult
and hazardous mission. He carried out his mission in a manner deserving the highest praise and I bring his conduct
to your notice for special commendation.
