The Director,
Royal Observatory.
Sir,
Royal Observatory,
Hong Kong,
April 20, 1926.
136
I have the honour to remind you that the reconsideration of my salary, promised in conjunction with the Estimates for 1926, was deferred. I respectfully request that my case should be considered with the Estimates
for 1927.
On appointment to my present office on May 17, 1912, my salary was £270 per annum. It is now, and has been for the last three years, £500 per annum. During the
fourteen years of my service the cost of living in this Colony has increased by more than one hundred per cent. Thus, despite the free passage scheme and provision of
rented quarters, I am financially in no better circumstances
now than at the beginning of my long term of service.
When the salaries of the European members of the staff of this Department were last adjusted in 1923, the Director and Chief Assistant received advances of £100, my
salary was raised £50. An inspection of the Civil Service
List convinces me that I have the dubious distinction of
having had my salary raised less pro rata, than any other
officer in the service of my seniority.
I earnestly request that you will refer to my
letters
