New Manager of the Canton-Kowloon Railway taking up his post.
Last year Lai Chiu Wen was appointed Manager of the Canton-Kowloon Railway, but as he was absent from Canton,
Li Shing Yik acted for him. Now he has returned, and on the 7th instant. at 3 p.m. he took up his post on the upper floor of the Railway Administration through the usual formalities. Sun To, the Minister of Reconstruction, was also present on the occasion, and gave a lecture for his guidance in his duties. The lecture reads as follows:-
*Gentlemen, Mr. Lai is now taking up his post as Manager of the Canton-Kowloon Railway. This Railway since its construction, was all the time under the control of the Ministry of Communication in Peking. But after the establishment of the Nationalist Government in July last year, the Bureau of Reconstruction of the Provincial Government, appointed under the direction of the Nationalist Government, Mr. Lai as Manager of the Railway. Be happened
to be absent from Canton, and therefore Mr. Li has acted for him. Now Mr. Lai has returned, and is taking up his post. The Railway was constructed with a loạn raised from England, but it is Chinese property and not English. The Nationalist Government is the only real Government of China, and therefore the Canton-Kowloon Railway should be placed under the control of the Nationalist Government. Among your staff, a small number of officers are British, who are sent by the British Financing Committee to assist in the management of the Railway, but despite this, they are subject to the control of our Government.
