I have the honour to inform you that I have
been notified by the Crown Agents for the Colonies (in their
letter 34 G/H.K. 3841/1 of 25th January 1926), that they are instructed by you that it is incorrect to write "Hongkong" as "Hong Kong". In view of the fact, however, that the
Colony is referred to as "Hong Kong" in the Royal
Instructions of 10th January 1922, I am of opinion that a
definite official form should now be approved both for Hong
Kong and Kowloon.
In recommending the adoption of the two forms (i) "Hong Kong" and (ii) "Kowloon", I am chiefly influenced by the common local usage. "Kowloon" is invariably so speltj There is some divergence as to Hong Kong, but the letters H.K. are almost always used in popular contractions.
I attach two enclosures giving fuller
particulars of the two transliterations under discussion.
