The two branches of the Legal profession
are separate in Hong Kong and there is no obstacle,
as there is in the Straits and other Colonies where
the two branches are fused, to giving silk in Hong
Kong.
If however Mr. Jenkin were made a K.C.
there would be 3 practising Silks there and 5 Juniors,
3 of whom are beginners, which would really be rather
an absurd position.
In addition to that I think the thira
paragraph in M. Jenkin's own letter shows cause why
his present application should not be granted.
If, as he states, he would as regards practice be in
precisely the same position as a K.. as he is as a
Junior the grant of silk would simply be one in the
nature of an honour, and that is not the basis on
which silk ought to be or now is given to Colonial
Barristers.
