sir,
GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
62
HONGKONG.
22nd January,1926
190
I have the honour to forward for your
information a repert concerning Russian activities
in Canton made by Captain Karatsky, a "white" Russian
in the empley of this Government, as the result of
a visit paid by him te Canten between the 8th and
15th January, and alse a statement on the same subject
made to Mr. T.H.King, Deputy Superintendent of Felice, by a Chinese, whose reliability he trusts, and whe has a first-hand knowledge of Canton
military affairs.
2.
It is noteworthy that Captain Karatsky's estimate of the number of Russians in Canton, namely 144 in all, tallies almost exactly with the number given by Mr. King's Chinese inform- ant, although the former knews nothing of the latter. The 13th paragraph of Captain Karataky's repert is ecially interesting as evidence of the antageniam between General Cheung Kai-shek and Beredin, se also is the statement that the Chinese parties in Canten are always quarrelling among themselves. I have as yet ne authentic information as to the rumours of the impending departure of Beradin and other Russians from Canten.
THE RIGHT HONOURABLE
LIEUTENANT COLONEL L.C.M.S. AMERY, M.P.,
