CONFLI

Hongkong Governor's Confidential Despatch of

17/3/24.

Sir.

I have the honour to tranmit to Your

Excellency a copy of a despatch which I have addressed to

the Secretary of State for the Colonies on the subject of

Sir John Oakley's award in the case of the Military Lands.

It will be observed that I have suggested that

His Majesty's Government might consider the handing over

as a gift to the University of the disused Elliot and

Fly Point Batteries valued in Sir John Oaxley's supplementary

award at the sum of $76,580.

2. In this connection I would invite reference

to Your Excellency's letter of the 8th of March, 1923. The

University Authorities are anxious to be put in possession

of these areas as early as possible, in order that they may

proceed with the construction of buildings which are urgently required; and I shall be glad if it can be arranged

to hand over the sites forthwith to the university, on the understanding that if His Majesty's Government is not prepared to adopt the suggestion to which I have referred, the sum of $76,580 will be placed to the credit of the Military Authorities in the Military Lands Account.

I have etc.,

(Sd). R. E. STUBBS,

Governor, &c.

His Excellency

The General Officer Commanding the Troops,

CHINA COMMAND.
