asks for an interview with the Secretary of State
I pointed out that there was no urgency as Sir Edward Stubbs was staying for the present, and
spoke of the Secretary of State being very busy.
Sir Paul told me he would be content to hear the
Secretary of State's decision Without an interview,
but he would like it soon, if possible.
I take it the answer should be that Sir
Edward Stubbs has volunteered to prolong his stay
for as long as may be necessary to deal with the
crisis; that the Secretary of State has gladly
accepted his offer and has complete confidence in
Sir E. Stubbs' ability to handle a difficult situa-
tion;
and that no formal extension is necessary.
We do not want to emphasize the refusal in
case it should affect Sir Edward Stubbs' "face" at
this juncture.
