trade with France was, according to these figures, very small, 280,000 franes exports and 246,000 francs imports, but there in of course a considerable trade between French Indo-China itself and Yunnan.

The chief commodity imported into Yunnan in transit across Indo-China is cotton yarn and in 1921 the total imports of this yarn wore 138,879 picule valued at 7,206,934 Hongkong taels of which 120,304 pieuls from India, The chief export is tin from the mines at Koshin which accounts for 82% of the value of the total axports and is all consigned to Hongkong.

II. As a general rule goods other than French or Chinese passing in transit through French Indo-China are subject to a transit duty equal to 20% of the duty which they would pay if imported into the Protectorate for consumption there. where, however, the transit duty falls to be calculated on the French "general" tariff duties (see below) they are calculated on the general duties in forse prior to the Desree of 28th March, 1921, which considerably increased the French "general" import duties.

The import duties in Indo-China are idential with those of the French (Metropolitan) Customs tariff subject to certain exceptions prescribed from time to time by decree, These exceptions form the 'Spesial Tariff' of Indo-China and are mostly goods of Chinese origin destined axalusively for sonsweption by Asiatics.

Chinese goods in virtue of the provisions of the Sino-French Convention, 1886, do not pay any transit duty in excess of 2 per cent. ad valoren,
