With reference to your letter No.37141/1911 of the 21st December, 1911, with regard to the Chinese Telegraph Office in Hongkong, I am directed by Mr. Secretary Chamberlain to tranmit to you, herewith, a copy of a telegram from His Majesty's Chargé d'Affaires at
Peking, stating that any reference to the removal of this
office from Hongkong at the present moment will jeopardise
the negotiations which are now taking place between the
Eastern Extension Telegraph Company and the Chinese
Government for the prolongation of the Cable Companies
landing rights in China after 1930.
2. I am to enquire the views of the Secretary of
State for the Colonies on this matter, and to request that
this department may be furnished with a copy of the
Hongkong despatch, dated June 17th, referred to in Mr.
Palairet's telegram.
