tude may be partly accounted for by his friendship with
zugene Chen, I should add that Dr. Sun personally always
showed himself ready enough, even anxious, for a reasonable
settlement; but aothough his name is utilised for its pres-
tige among the Chinese, he obviously counts for comparati-
vely little in practice and is clearly in the hands of his
entourage.
General Li Ju-lin also promised us to do his best
to nut an end to the strike. Mr. Tam Lai-ting, who appear-
ed early in the proceedings as mediator, was General Li
Fu-lin's representative, and worked in concert with Mr. Ka
Chit-chun, when I have also mentioned in my despatches.
here is finally Mr. Wei Hsi, Dr. 3un's French-speaking
secretary, who was present at our last interview with him,
nd who also rendered most useful assistance.
I finally enclose herewith copy of a report on the
latter part of the strike, addressed by the Senior Naval
officer to the Commodore (enclosure 3), which besides ser-
ving to supplement mine should prove of general interest.
I have the honour to be,
31r.
Your most obedient
humble servant,
(Bd) Bertram Giles,
Consul-General.
