taken and asking them to co-operate in their territory.

During the montl. 750 tons of coal was provided

by the Hongkong Government as a contribution towards

the anti-pirate campaign. This coal was delivered to

General Li's representative at Yungki. Further supplies

will be sent either there or to Canton consigned to the

General's representatives, but not to any of Dr. Sun's

departments.

There have been a few isolated cases of piracy

during the month, all except two being on the main west

River. The Delta itself has been practically free of

piracy but there are signs of it starting again in the

East River area; this is chiefly the work of undiscipli-

ned troops from tile Kwangsi and Kdangsi provinces.

Most of the West River piracies were cases of

internal piracy, the pirated craft being met later by a

cirato launch. - There are still neveral of these pirate

launches at large in tie leong Shan and South West River

areas,

three have also been reported in the East River

district but they move about contiruously via the smaller

creeks which gunboats cannot navigate and so escape all

observation. Fortunately, "Robin" whilst proceeding up

the Sallam Channel on 28th Septenter came across two

launches which had attacked the liong Kong Shekki tow

shortly before-hand. One, the S/L "Hanply", owned by

Rafeek of hongkong was re-captured and casualties inflict-

ed on the escaping pirates. The other, the B/L "Tin

Fook" attempted to escape up a small creek but was fol-

lowed by "Robin" and sunk by gunfire.

=

The "Tin Fook" was one of the so called Military

launches which has been in the hands of piratical soldiery

for some time and was badly wanted. Until systematic

searches up all the many little creeks can be carried out,

there is small chance of exterminating these launches. To
