I received from Lin Ch'u in charge of the Shuntak
moving column a report that informers have informed him that at Shang Ti Hsiang in the 8th Ward of Shuntak disctrict
notorious robbers Ho Mau, Ho Sheng, and 10-cheo-mien have
collected a band of pirates and committed many piracies on
steamboats as well as passengers boata passing that way,
and the despatch of troops is requested. So I ordered
Colonel Pan Chin to cooperate with the local defence corps
Comus.nder Wu Chin in taking forces to surround them. I
have now received from the Colonel a report that he went
with the corpa commander to Shang Ti Hsiang, where they met
early in the morning of the 1st instant and sert men to
hunt out the pirates. Ás 3000 as the latter saw the troops;
they opened fire and showed resistance. One of the pirates
was killed and two of the soldiers wounded, while five
robbers including: Ho Hsin-chiu and ho Tsao-chin were captur- ed.
The robbers were defeated and dispersed. Lin Chi is
sending a deputy to examine the captives, and in the mean-
time has sent me the above report.
I have given orders for the capture of the fugi-
tives, and in the meantime have the honour to report as
above for your information.
